Overview

In an ongoing effort to improve security on the University of Guyana campuses, the institution has implemented a Security Department, managed by, Mr. Hugh Gibson. As a team we work closely with senior officers Guyana Police Force and the external security service on campus to identify security issues facing the University, to implement and enhances security management in every area across the university network. In 2013, there were several reports of robberies on the campus and the administration has responded to calls from students and staff to put measures in place to beef up security. In this regard, measures to improve security on the campuses have been put in place.

Additional purposes of this department include the installation of additional lighting, deployment of guards in parking areas, and CCTV Cameras and more recently, stricter rules on entry and exit of staff, students and visitors to the campus ensuring that students and staff adhere to the rule of wearing their ID badges while on the campus.

The department also has responsibilities for all I.D.C.E’s and campuses within the network.

Mission

The University of Guyana Security Department is dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment for all students, staff, faculty and visitors. We provide programs on personal safety, protection of property, conflict resolution, maintenance of public order, emergency response assistance, crime prevention and detection, enforcement of the criminal code and University and Regulations.

Departmental Mandate, Overview, and Training Mandate

The Campus Police Services is dedicated to creating a safe and secure environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors. In fulfilling this mandate, Campus Police work in partnership with the Guyana Police Force community in developing programs and conducting activities to promote safety and security on campus. The Campus Police Services is an interdependent service that facilitates internal and external resources. The department operates on the philosophy that safety and security of the community is a responsibility of all members of the community.

  • Enforcement of the Guyana Police Force, applicable provincial statutes, municipal Guyana laws and university regulatory policies
